The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) and MTC Logistics have announced MTC’s purchase of property immediately adjacent to the ASPA’s container terminal, operated by APM Terminals. MTC will build a state-of-the-art international temperature-controlled distribution center focused on both import and export cargo.
“We’re extremely pleased to see this world-class services company invest in both our region and our port. MTC’s investment will create new jobs and add new products to the port’s container intermodal operations,” said James K Lyons, director and chief executive officer for the ASPA.
F Brooks Royster III, president of MTC, said, “2018 marks 90th anniversaries for both ASPA and MTC. What a great way to celebrate these milestones by building a state-of-the-art international distribution center in Mobile. Under Phase I, MTC will invest approximately $60 million and directly employ 50 to 70 associates at the new facility.
“ASPA’s vision to acquire the land was key to this transaction, and if not for its unique location, it is unlikely this project would have come to fruition,” said Royster. “Being able to find property immediately adjacent to a world-class port such as Mobile and in such close proximity to I-10 is a very unique opportunity. The project received favorable endorsements by local and state officials.”
“Our goal is to provide our customers with seamless supply chain solutions focused on global commerce,” said Ernie Ferguson, vice president of sales with MTC. “This strategic location on the US Gulf Coast will allow us to expand our service offering, and we will have a significant focus on import cargo to help balance refrigerated container supply in Mobile.”
“This new facility will be more than 12 million cubic feet in size with approximately 40,000 racked pallet positions,” said Royster. “We will offer a comprehensive suite of services including blast freezing, port drayage and LTL consolidation. We have been in the temperature-controlled logistics business for 90 years and are thrilled Mobile will be a part of our future.”
Currently ranked the 10th-largest US seaport in total trade and with more than $1 billion invested in public infrastructure, the ASPA operates deep-water terminals serving bulk, general cargo, container intermodal, RO/RO, and overdimensional cargoes.
MTC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoffberger Holdings Inc (HHI) a diversified privately held investment company of the Hoffberger family of Baltimore MD. With the expansion, MTC will operate four distribution centers with more than 40 million cubic feet of refrigerated and frozen space, serving the ports of Mobile AL, Baltimore, Philadelphia PA and Wilmington DE.
